Smoking!

Being somebody who has never smoked or been with people who smoke, I often find myself asking the question, "Why do they smoke?" From a non-smoker's point of view, I can't even understand why they would want to try it from seeing the public campaigns to try and stop smoking.

One cigarette can contain around 4,000 chemicals, including substances such as carbon monoxide, tar, arsenic, cyanide, benzene, formaldehyde, methanol, acetylene, ammonia, lead. Doesn't exactly sound like a meal that you'd spend your money on in a restaurant does it? But funnily enough, smokers spend a ridiculous amount of money on cigarettes in a lifetime. For example, if somebody smokes 10 cigarettes a day for 20 years, they have wasted £18,260! (Think of all the clothes you could buy in TOPSHOP with that money!)

Along with the money issues, there is of course the medical issues. The NHS spend about £1.5 Billion a year on issues with smoking. With this cost being cut down, money could be spent elsewhere in the health department. Somewhere where the people cannot help their illness, unlike smokers who actually have an oppurtunity to stop smoking and reduce the chances of them getting diseases such as mouth cancer, lung cancer, heart diseases or suffering from strokes!

However, even though there are the ugly sides to smoking, as the Handout on smoking shows, there are sometimes when smoking is made to look like an attractive trait on someone. Especially when there are famous filmstars, models and singers who are often seen smoking. Take a look at one of the most famous pictures of Audrey Hepburn, she is holding a cigarette, yet she somehow seems to glamourise smoking. As was mentioned, however, whenever a character smokes, it is for a certain reason. For a woman it is seen as sexy. What does it mean when a man smokes in a film? Is there a stereotype for male smokers? Do all female smokers have to be sexy?
